One of my Mom's good friends, Lillian used to give me yarn when we visited her house. Lillian crocheted so she always had the yarn handy and that was one of the many highlights of my visits to her house. The yarn would keep me busy long into our car ride back home.
I thought about Lillian when I found the pics above. She was one of the first people to introduce me to string figures. She was also a great story-teller. She used to tell stories about her then boyfriend "Snake" and the way he would play his version of "Ike" to her "Tina". I loved the way she spoke, laughed and coughed. Because the laughter would almost always lead to prolonged bouts of coughing, or the coughing lead to prolonged bouts of laughter...you could never tell with Lillian. When she knew I had heard something my young ears should not have heard, she would look at me and wink the most exagerratedly long wink I have ever seen. To this day I have never seen anyone control their wink the way Lillian did. LOL
My Mom called me last year and told me that Lillian died. I didn't really think about the impact she had on me until I saw those pictures of the Laguardia students making string figures.
Thank you Lillian! I know you are doing that wink back at me!
